ABSTRACT

The manufacturing industry is facing the most severe impacts when dealing with major challenges such as global warming and climate change. The gear manufacturing industry holds a significant position in the Taiwanese economy, making it urgent to conduct detailed carbon inventory analysis and propose effective carbon reduction strategies. This study focuses on a gear manufacturing company in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and conducts a carbon inventory analysis based on the ISO 14064-1 standard to identify carbon emission sources and propose effective reduction strategies. A questionnaire containing 20 different carbon reduction strategies was designed, and the general manager of the company was invited to evaluate these strategies based on feasibility, reduction effectiveness, and implementation cost. Finally, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was employed as a decision-making tool to rank these strategies and identify the most suitable carbon reduction strategy for the company. The results of this study not only provide specific carbon reduction pathways for the gear manufacturing industry but also offer empirical support for the green transformation and sustainable development of the overall manufacturing industry. Through this study, the gear manufacturing industry in Taiwan will be able to achieve environmental protection goals while pursuing economic benefits, adapt to the era of global carbon emission costs, and enhance its international competitiveness.
